Not necessary. My Android slate doesnt have GSM and I used my spare Google Voice number. I installed the app, it asked me to call a number to get a 3 digit activation. I called it using my phone and got the 3 digit number. went back to my slate and entered what they gave me. it may defeat the purpose of integrating your real number to Whatsapp, but it has some advantages.

Ok everyone after searching and searching the internet trying to find out how to edit the carrier.plist file, i finally found a pretty easy solution. Download ifile in Cydia> in ifile you will see a small house icon, go into it> Library> Carrier Bundle.bundle > carrier.plist> the "[key]ShowCallForwarded[/key]
[YES/]" should be about 8 or so lines under the long list of . Hit edit and change the to . After that reboot your phone and PRESTO! I have a 3G 3.1.2 btw

Thanks, the direct editing of the plist worked a treat on 3.1.2. I had no luck with the ##002# method though, I think this may depend on the particular carrier you are using. I'm using 3mobile in the UK.

So, I took a different solution for the unlock part and bought on Ebay the “2009 Gevey 3g PLUS 2″ turbo sim for $ 9.00. I was very skeptical about the turbo sim, but decided to give it a try and it worked as a charm with T-Mobile USA and a Dutch provider called Telfort (roaming in the USA via T-Mobile). I truly believe that we have reached the point where technology has become one with our world, and I am fairly certain that we have passed the point of no return in our relationship with technology.

I don't mean this in a bad way, of course! Societal concerns aside... I just hope that as technology further develops, the possibility of copying our memories onto a digital medium becomes a true reality. It's one of the things I really wish I could see in my lifetime.
